This video features the incredible giant sea bass now making a comeback from near regional extinction in southern California. These gentle giants, reaching more than 7 feet long and a reported 800 pounds, were fished in our waters for food and sport. As early as 1910 angler and conservationist Charles F. Holder, co-founder of Avalon's Tuna Club, called for their protection. By the early 1970's they had essentially disappeared from our region. Efforts by the State of California and its residents resulted in the reappearance of these fish in the late 1980s and 1990s.

The first 22-minute episode details the name changes, distribution, habitat preferences, physical features, feeding behavior and the ecology of the parasite-host-cleaner interactions on this species.

The second episode focuses on the courtship and mating behavior, development, conservation efforts that have resulted in a return of these gentle giants to our waters and scientific research efforts to determine the best strategies to ensure this species' recovery throughout southern California.
