This DVD features two 22-minute segments covering the Sea Chubs (Kyphosidae) and grunts (Haemulidae) found in southern California, with additional examples from the waters of the Sea of Cortez and the western Caribbean.
Our local sea chubs include the opaleye (Girella nigricans), halfmoon (Medialuna californiensis) and zebra perch (Hermosilla azurea). This fish family is largely a tropical one, but its local representatives offer interesting insights into dietary shifts, the biogeography of genetic traits and cleaning behavior.
Only two species of grunts are found in Southern California waters. These are the salema (Xenistius californiensis) and sargo (Anisotremus davidsonii). The grunt family is also a warm water one. True to their name, grunts cast aside the myth of "the Silent World" by creating sound. Our local species exhibit different feeding patterns and interesting dirnal changes in behavior.
